Training the Minds For Future

vocational education in India, secondary education in India

There is a common belief in our country that vocational education is for those who are not good at academics. However, it’s not the way it is to be meant. Today the main concern in developing India is unemployment and a huge population of job seekers with academic degrees.  Every individual is equipped with at least one skill through which they can earn their livelihood and contribute within their families. To avail these to the budding generation it is important to make them aware of all the possible options available to them.

Understanding Vocational Education

Vocational training is about learning a skill that is related to work. It’s not just another easier option; as comprehended by most of us; rather it provides practical skills needed for employment. In fact, if equipped with the right vocational skill, the learner is better suited for employment in the long run. Another opinion for many people is to indulge in academic learning and vocational learning as they always complement each other. The idea behind introducing vocational skills at school and college level was to empower students who drop out of school or college to have some ability that will help them gain employment. It is no clandestine that the snowballing competitive world of employment continues to seek people with right skills and experience; hence there will be a larger need for skilled people in all sectors and different job roles.

Vocational education serves as a great alternative for those who cannot afford to invest three or four years to earn a university degree or has some financial crunch. It offers a wide range of job opportunities without costing much compared to the tremendous amount of money a conventional degree requires. And hence vocational training policy should be evolved and must be adopted by all sections of society.

vocational education in India should form a vital component of our education system across universities and technical institutes. Education policies should access the possibilities in totality – develop a path for vocational skilling right from school till college. As the Chinese proverb goes, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the second best time is now.”
